Weed Science Research

The faculty in weed science are engaged in research, education, and extension outreach activities related to weeds and their impact on human activities. Applied research areas in weed science include weed management in the major agronomic and horticultural crops, forages, turfgrasses, and forages found in Georgia as well as management of invasive weed species in the state. Basic research is conducted on herbicide fate in water and soils in the state, herbicide physiology, and herbicide resistance in weeds.

Weed science research is conducted at the Athens, Griffin, and Tifton campuses as well as all of the Research and Education Centers located near the main production areas of the main agricultural production areas in the state. Laboratory facilities on the Athens, Griffin, and Tifton campuses are well-equipped with state-of the-art chromatographic and spectrophotometric instrumentation to analyze herbicide residues from plant and environmental samples. Weed science faculty also collaborate with other faculty in genetics, horticulture, plant pathology, and entomology that provide access to a wide array of expertise to solve research problems.
