Remediation

The faculty in Environmental Remediation conducts research on methods to clean up contaminated surface and ground waters, aquifers, and soils. For contaminants such as halogenated hydrocarbon solvents, research objectives include identifying mechanisms of decontamination and developing procedures to enhance their effectiveness. Research on soils contaminated with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons involve the use of solid compost amendment to accelerate degradation. Other remediation projects are focused on the use of macrophytes as bioconcentration units for wastewater treatment of toxic metals. Work on environmental remediation is conducted at the Athens, Griffin, and Tifton campuses.
