Research, Teaching, and Extension Work
I do research and teaching in the department in soil and environmental chemistry. Most of my current work is on land application of industrial wastes ("by-products") such as coal combustion wastes (fly ash, gypsum), pulp and paper mill wastes, and sewage sludge. The emphasis is on the chemistry of nutrients, trace metals and organic contaminants in these products, and preventing soil/water/crop contamination from land application. I also do some work on colloid dispersion and migration in soils, in characterizing charge components, and in clay-organic interactions. I teach the introductory soils course (Soils and Hydrology) in cooperation with the School of Forest Resources, as well as a graduate/undergrad course in chemical analyses of soils and water, and a grad level course (with several other faculty) in soil physical chemistry. In my spare time I work at the The Laboratory for Environmental Analysis, a new lab facility specializing in analyses of organic and inorganic contaminants in soils, waters, and waste materials.
