Research, Teaching, and Extension Work
My research focuses on the development of grain cultivars and germplasm with superior productivity and quality. As part of a multi-disciplined team consisting of breeders, agronomists, pathologists and entomologists, we cooperate to identify, incorporate and evaluate germplasm and potential cultivars for their agronomic suitability and capacity to resist economically important pests such as leaf rust, powdery mildew, and Hessian fly. Cultivar resistance is both the most economical and environmentally friendly method of reducing losses due to pests. Emphasis is also being placed on linkage research between molecular markers and disease and insect resistant genes. Research on rooting potential of wheat under waterlogged, acid soil/mineral toxicity, and drought conditions is also a thrust area. Major emphases are placed on wheat and rye for grain and straw production as well as for forage and double-cropping systems.
