Research, Teaching, and Extension Work
My research interests focus on environmental transport and transformation of organic pollutants in soil and water systems and innovative schemes for environmental management and remediation. I am particularly interested in the transformation of certain persistent and/or emerging pollutants (pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, hormones, and pharmaceuticals) mediated by soil enzymes and the consequent impacts of these processes on water quality. My research is aimed at acquiring fundamental understandings of such enzymatic reactions in relation to the molecular structures of the contaminants, the enzymes, and the enzyme/contaminant binding configurations. Such findings are then used as a basis for scientific assessments of the environmental fate and risks of the contaminants and for development of enzyme-based schemes to facilitate contaminant detoxification. My recent research thrusts also involve the environmental implications and applications of nanomaterials. I teach two courses: Introduction to Water Quality and Chemical Analysis of Environmental Samples.
