Research, Teaching, and Extension Work
As Soil-Plant-Water Scientist in Tifton since 1978, irrigation has been the center of much of my research. Water management means managing soil, crop, and supplemental water. We work to define water requirements of crops in the humid east and to characterize the soil environment necessary for growth, yield and profitable production. Crop growth and water use models form the framework to test our understanding of the interplay of multiple phenomena of the soil-plant-atmosphere system and their changes in time. These models serve Georgia's farmers to schedule irrigation and water planners to project Georgia's water needs for the future. With competition for water increasing even in the humid east, we must find ways of optimizing our investment in agriculture water, determine its economic significance for growers and rural communities, and evaluate irrigation water use in the context of the social and economic environment of the region.
