Research, Teaching, and Extension Work
As an Extension Specialist, my primary responsibility is to train and assist county agents across the State of Georgia in the area of soil fertility. This is accomplished through newsletter articles, production guides, TV and radio, phone consultations, and on-farm research/demonstrations and visits. This information is ultimately used by the agricultural producer or grower. My educational programs in soil fertility are also delivered directly to growers through county meetings, popular press articles, professional conferences (such as the Cotton Production Workshop), and on-farm visits. My main areas of work include 1) basic soil fertility (including all aspects of liming and fertilization), 2) use of animal waste and other agricultural, municipal and industrial by-products as fertilizers, lime and soil amendments, and 3) conservation tillage. I mainly focus on cotton and peanuts, but also serve as a resource for corn, soybeans, tobacco, small grains, canola and forages. I am a member of the Extension Cotton and Peanuts Teams, The AWARE (Animal Waste Awareness for Research and Extension) Team, and the Georgia Conservation Tillage Alliance. I also serve as Educational Advisor to the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society and edit their quarterly newsletter, the What and Why.
