Research, Teaching, and Extension Work

My research interest includes microbial water quality as impacted by land application of animal waste and onsite septic systems; fate and transport of human pathogens in soils and their transmission to fresh produce; the impact of antibiotics and hormones from urban and agricultural sources on soil microbial communities and its ramification on soil functioning; the ecology and molecular biology of soil microbial communities that mediate N and C cycling. My lab uses a combination of conventional microbiology and soil science techniques along with molecular microbiology tools to address research questions that are relevant to the areas of interest mentioned above.

I teach two courses, Soil Microbiology (CRSS 4610) and Soils and Hydrology (CRSS 3060) in spring and fall semesters, respectively.
