Crop & Soil Sciences: Academic Programs

Graduate

Faculty and graduate students in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences carry out research in several areas of Environmental Soil Science, Crop Management and Physiology, Weed Science, Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics.  You can obtain more information on these research areas by accessing our Research Web page.

For student interested in Environmental Soil Science, Crop Management and Physiology, or Weed Science, the Department offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Crop and Soil Sciences (code 0173A) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Crop and Soil Sciences (code 0173B), both of which require original research.  In addition, the Department offers a non-thesis Master of Crop and Soil Sciences (M.C.S.S.) degree (code 0173), as well as an interdepartmental Master of Plant Protection and Pest Management (M.P.P.P.M.) degree (code 0656). Students who desire to take a limited number of classes for professional certification but not pursue a degree may be admitted in the Nondegree category.

M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics (PBGG) are available through the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, which is associated with our department. To apply to either of these programs, please visit the Institute's graduate page.

Most graduate students receive financial aid in the form of 40%-time assistantships that currently pay $16,769 for the M.S. degree and $17,852 for the Ph.D. Degree. All students on assistantship receive out-of-state tuition waivers and in-state fee reductions. Reduced in-state tuition and incidental fees amount to approximately $600/semester. Please see the Bursar’s page for additional information on these fees. In addition, all graduate students on graduate assistantships are required to enroll in a mandatory health insurance program that is partially subsidized by the University. Additional information on health insurance can be found at the Health Center web page.

Please feel free to contact our Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Miguel Cabrera, if you have questions regarding our graduate program. You are also welcome to contact our faculty members directly as to the possibility of working under their guidance.
