Admission Guidelines

Admission guidelines are based on transcripts as well as GPA and GRE scores. GPA scores mentioned below are based on all courses taken for the baccalaureate degree or the M.S. degree using a scale in which 4.0 = A. GRE scores are based on the sum of the scores of aptitude portion of the exam (Verbal + Quantitative).

Master of Science Degree and Master of Crop and Soil Sciences Degree

Overall GPA >= 2.8 and GRE >= 1000; or
overall GPA >= 3.1 and GRE >= 900; or
overall GPA >= 3.4 and GRE >=800

Master of Plant Protection and Pest Management
Overall GPA >=3.0 and GRE aptitude portion combined score >=900.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.)
Completion of an M.S. program or equivalent and GPA on M.S. program of 3.5 and GRE >=1000. Students will be expected to have an M.S. degree or equivalent from a U.S. college for admission to the Ph.D. program. The M.S. degree or equivalent obtained from non-U.S. universities must be evaluated by the Graduate Coordinating Committee for acceptance.

Nondegree Students
Completion of a baccalaureate or higher degree.

Required Exams and Reference Letters
The GRE is required for all but nondegree students without exceptions. For foreign students, the quantitative portion of the GRE must show a minimum score of 500. The TOEFL (test of English as a Foreign Language) is required for all students who have not previously earned a degree taught in English. The TOEFL score must be a minimum of 550 on the written exam or 213 on the computerized exam. GRE and TOEFL scores should be sent directly to the Graduate School. Three strong letters of reference using the Graduate School Form should be sent directly to the Graduate Coordinator of the department at the address listed below. A letter describing your background and interest in graduate education should also be sent directly to the Graduate Coordinator at the address listed below.

Provisional Acceptance into Graduate Programs
A student who meets the Graduate School requirements for admission (GPA of 2.6 and GRE (Verbal + Quantitative) of 800 for M.S. students; GPA of 3.0 and GRE of 1000 for Ph.D. students) but fails to meet the departmental guidelines (GPA and GRE) outlined above may be admitted provisionally as a non-degree student for one semester. At the end of the initial semester, the student status will be changed to that of a fully admitted graduate student if the student’s performance during the first semester meets the criteria described below.

During the first semester of attendance, a provisionally accepted student must take at least three graduate courses (9 credit hours) selected by the Graduate Coordinating Committee in consultation with the student’s prospective major professor. If the student obtains at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (MS student) or 3.3 (Ph.D. student) for the three selected courses, the student will be fully admitted starting the following semester.
