Bottom ash is a coarse (sand to gravel-sized) material removed from the grating at the bottom of coal-fired boilers in power generating plants. Due to its low density it is widely used as light-weight construction material, including construction fill, surfacing (“cinders”), and in light-weight aggregate (“cinder block”). It is chemically inert, with very low concentrations of soluble materials (either nutrients or contaminants). |
Many custom-blended soil applications in horticulture (raised beds, potting soils, soil physical amendments) are aimed at improving aeration, drainage, and lowering density. Bottom ash has good potential to be used in mixes, especially with organic components, to add favorable physical properties to specialty soil mixes for a range of uses.
